Pt. Ratnakar Pai
Pt. Ratnakar Pai (born 1928) was an eminent singer and a senior guru belonging to the renowned Jaipur Gharana. He received training from two erudite teachers- the late Pandit Mohanrao Palekar and the late Ustad Gullubhai Jasdanwala. While the latter was a disciple of one of the greatest singers of the Hindustani vocal tradition, namely Ustad Alladiya Khansaheb, the former represented the other branch of the Jaipur Gayaki which was not directly under Alladiya Khansaheb’s influence. Pandit Pai’s singing is thus a wonderful Union of the two sub-streams of the Jaipur gayaki. End owned with an extremely tuneful voice and an uncanny sense of the intricacies of laya, Pandit Pai’s singing is one of the purest expressions of Jaipur Gayaki. The aesthetics of the gayaki is based on the solid foundation of compositions which delineate the nuances of the ragas accompanied by an off-beat approach to laya. The musical fabric of melody and rhythm is tightly woven and the appeal is distinctly to the structural and intellectual aspect of creativity. The emphasis is on the precision, clean and bold strokes and balance, rather than frills, decoration and technical showmanship.
Aditi Kaikini Upadhya
One of India's most dynamic young Hindustani vocalists, was born into a family rich in musical tradition and artistic example. Aditi has received intense training in the traditional paramparic style, characterized by the dedicated and close tutelage of her Guru and father, Pandit Dinkar Kaikini, himself a grand and renowned gavaiyya of the Agra Gharana, and her mother, respected vocalist Shashikala Kaikini. A worthy spokeswoman of her father's powerful but nuanced style of singing, she has also chosen to highlight her lighter musical side, following training under Smt. Shobha Gurtu, known for her unparalleled mastery of Dadra, Thumri and Hori. She is also an active educator, guiding a select group of disciples and conducting workshops and lecture-demonstrations in India and abroad.
